Feedback Thoughts
The two articles I decided to read to learn more about why feedback is important were 'A Fixed mindset could be holding you Back' and 'How to get past negativity bias'
Firstly I read 'A Fixed mindset could be holding you back' , this article discusses how praising children for doing something right can actually backfire on us. That this doesn't create resilience in the long run and instead we need to celebrate both failures and successes. This is what we call a fixed mindset.
"When the world starts to be a bit more honest with you about what your strengths and weaknesses actually are, and you start hearing negative things about yourself, if you've developed a fixed mindset you become very brittle,".
On the other hand a growth mindset is somebody that believes that intelligence and abilities can be developed through practice and feedback. This creates a mindset that makes it a lot easier to bounce back from failure and further develop their skills.
So if we want to change our fixed mindset into a growth mindset the article recommends to get into a group and team and discuss together what you can do differently to improve. Which is highly motivating as you are all working together to tackle the issue.
Secondly I read 'How to get past negativity bias', negative bias is our brains prioritising negative input over positive input. Hanson says that we have developed a brain that routinely scans for bad news both internally and externally. So how do we stop this?
Hanson developed a technique called 'HEAL' which is an acronym for the four steps to follow- Have a good experience, absorb it, enrich it and link it to something slightly negative.
Have
This is done by either creating a positive experience or calling up on a previous memory where you were happy and to really feel the positive and happy emotions from it.
Enrich
You can further enrich your memory by continuing to think about it or using all 5 senses to remember that specific memory.
Absorb
Lingering in how that specific memory may help you in this step by absorbing it. Think about why this memory makes you feel happy.
Linking
Keeping the positive experience in the foreground the next step is to link it to a negative experience. The idea is to feel all the senses and emotions of the positive one with the dim recognition of the negative experience in the background. This can be a challenging step for people dealing with extreme traumas.
I feel I've learnt a lot from both articles and will definitely be taking this feedback on board.
