Game Brainstorm

Ideas

General Overview

From somebody who has never really been into gaming I definitely found brainstorming ideas for possible games quite difficult, especially considering I have no idea what I will be capable of by the end of term. None the less I got out my notebook and began brainstorming. I juggled around with a few ideas but the four ideas I've come up with are:

A Racing Game with Cars:

Something that stands out to me from my childhood is watching my cousins play racing games on their consoles. Although they would never give me a shot (because I was a girl, I know how times have changed...) I always wanted to try it out. So one of the ideas I've come up with is to have a few cars racing in a lap to a finish line. Ideally it would be two to four cars with a countdown and then once the countdown is done they would all go and race. The lap would include different scenery along the way. It would consist of three to four laps around the map. Some of my inspiration comes from console games and also arcade games. It would be similar to the games in the arcade but instead of racing with a physical wheel and foot pedals like in the arcades, you would use your mouse and keyboard. One of the challenges I would have would be to have obstacles along the way, for example blockages like road signs or boxes to make it more difficult and challenging for the players. For the winner there would be different level up prizes to win to move on to the next level. I would brainstorm more ideas to make this game have a different twist to other racing games that already exist if I decide to use this as my final idea. I think this would be a very fun and interactive game to create and definitely something that I would consider making in my further research and development phases for this project, I just hope that it would be something I would be capable of making in the future!

Enemy chasing player game

Another game/app that helped me to gain inspiration from and that I absolutely loved when I was younger was temple run and subway surfers. Growing up I remember everybody being obsessed with these two apps and it was always a competition who had the highest score! They were my favourite games to play on my phone and I am sure a lot of people can agree with me! I loved the idea of running away from something and the game consistently speeding up whilst you are collecting coins and being thrown distractions and challenges along the way. For my version of this game to make it more original and unique was to have a robber in a huge department store running away from security. They would be running around the department store going up and down escalators and onto the different levels. A long the way they would be collecting/stealing more item’s (this would be their equivalent of coins) and if they were to drop something more security guards would begin chasing them. There would be challenges and distraction’s along the way, for example clothes on the floor, other customers and long ques at the tills. There would be no end goal but the game would get more difficult as it would speed up. The more clothes you collect would mean more points at the end and you could level up. I really like this idea and haven’t seen something to similar before being created. I got the inspiration from my job as I work in a department store and always see the security guards chasing robbers around the store. Here is a youtube video that I found that

that I think could be useful for creating this game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y82yS40fvIc

Building Stimulation Game

I’m not so sure if this idea would be something I would be capable of even making but one type of game I’ve always loved is building stimulators. For example The Sims, I always loved building my own houses for my sims to live in and getting to design the interior with furniture and decorations as well. I also always loved creating and building houses and different buildings in Minecraft. So I thought that creating a building stimulator game where you build your house or whatever building you want to make with different materials and blocks would be a fun idea. You would have a list filled with different building blocks of different colours and materials to choose from. There would also be interior decorations and furniture to decorate the inside. I would also make different floor tiles, wood, carpet etc and wall papers and textures. There would be a variety of windows and doors. Finally there would also be outdoor item’s like outdoor furniture, decking and things for gardening like trees, plants, flowers etc. This game could be used for fun just for anyone that enjoys building aspects of games or even for architects and interior designers to plan out their projects and get some practice. It would ideally be made in a world with different terrains to choose from depending on what you would prefer. In the future I could even progress this game to make it that you could create family’s and characters to live in the house. But, this would be something I would research further in the future. I feel like this is a game I would not only enjoy making but also to play myself. I really hope that this could be something I’d be able to make and consider for my final idea/project.

Traffic Light Game

The final game idea that I brainstormed and think would make for a good game that I would probably be capable of making is a traffic light game. Inspired from when I was younger and me and my neighbours or friends would play this in school, Basically, one person stands at the top a few metres in front of everyone else playing and the idea is for everyone else to get to the person at the top. But the rules are that you cannot move towards the person at the top unless they are turned away from everyone else. So if you are caught running by the person at the top you lose. For a video game version of this game I was thinking of having a traffic light at the top that turns green when the character(s) can move forward and red when they have to stop. You would use a button on your keyboard to move forward and another keyboard button to stop. The traffic light would change colours randomly and would get more difficult as you got closer to the top. I think this would be a very fun and easy enough game to create that would involve having quick reflexes. I would probably just have one character in the game as it would be single player and have different maps to play on depending on what level you are on. I would also have a few different characters to choose from depending on your preferences. I also feel this game would be very nostalgic for people as this is a very popular childhood game that I think everyone really enjoyed growing up.

  1. I love your idea for a building sim! I'm a huge fan of the sims and I would love to see more games where you get to build and design your own homes, bars, cafes, shops and other buildings. I think it's an exciting and interesting idea

  2. Hi Mary

I just have to say I love your idea of the game where the player is being chased by security in a department store it sounds great especially since you were inspired by games like Subway Surfers and Temple Run just like I was for my game. I find the idea of having clothes on the ground being picked up the robber to increase their score.
I was wondering would the player get a second chance before getting caught by the security and would the direction the player goes be just straight or would they be able go left or right as in temple run. I think it would be great to incorporate a jump and slide mechanic into the game. I would incorporate with your escalators one that goes up and another that goes down and if the player goes up the wrong one they will get caught because either they slow down or fall over going up or down the wrong one.
