For this weeks readings we were assigned with the readings: What Every Game Developer Needs to Know about Story, by John Sutherland, Mass Effect 2: A Case Study in the design of Game Narrative and the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyMndWpihTM.
In the reading What Every Game Developer Needs to Know about Story, it discusses how games are developing all the time and with this comes a want for more in dept storytelling. That people want a more human experience in their games, and story is a universal human experience. This blog post states that we need to remember that games are not movies, and that story need conflict. Story telling is a collaborative effort within the team creating games and the whole team must know at-least the basics of creating the story.
In the video, it talks about interactive games and just how interactive they are. He says that it is actually quite disappointing in that what you choose in the game doesn't really affect the outcome just as much as you may think. The game creators make it so that you think the choices you are making are changing the outcome but overall the plot will always stay the same. The argument for this is that it costs a lot of money and takes a lot of time to create games with many different outcomes according to what choice you make.
After my readings of the above I feel i'm more acknowledged on story telling & interactive games, which I can implement into my own game and game making in the future. I found it all interesting especially the video because I was not aware that interactive games are actually not as interactive as we think.
Hi Mary, great to be back on your blog
ReplyDeleteYou’ve done a great job with this reading task
Personally I have always struggled with the reading tasks, I’ve just found them so tedious, overlong and boring
I remember seeing a tweet about the idea for your game an being very intrigued by it
The stop & go system seemed very unique
Hoping everything will turn out just fine for you and you get the grade you want
